Preston High School Senior Project Information
Project Description: The successful completion of a senior project, now called the Future readiness project, is both a State of Idaho and Preston High School graduation requirement (State of Idaho Minimum Graduation Requirements). Students complete their project outside of their regular school schedules to earn the PHS graduation credit.
Important senior project elements:
1. Students are allowed to begin their project the second semester of their Junior year (Early February) and are expected to complete it by the end of the first semester of their Senior year.
2. All projects require a minimum of 25 hours earning a minimum of 25 points completing prescribed future readiness activities, the successful completion of a project portfolio, the successful completion of a formal presentation in front of a panel of judges.
3. Students must have their project plan approved through the submission of a project plan form.
4. Student must complete all project activities during project timeframe unless given specific prior approval. Work completed prior to the approval process will not be accepted.
5. Although students are allowed to complete work over the summer months; no plans will be reviewed or approved over the summer, and work completed prior to approval will NOT be accepted.
Project Overview:
Preston High School Senior Project (Future Readiness) 2026 - 27 Objective: The Future Readiness Project is intended to be a mastery-based capstone activity where students demonstrate advanced learning and the critical thinking skills necessary for post high school success. Important considerations/stipulations:
- The successful completion of the project is a State of Idaho and Preston High School graduation requirement.
- Students receive a one-semester credit for successfully completing the project.
- The project requires each student to complete a variety of future readiness activities. The completion of the project will take between 25 and 35 hours.
- Students complete the project outside of their regular class schedule.
- Students begin the project during the second semester of their junior year and conclude it at the end of the first semester of their senior year.
- Activities or skills completed/learned in another class in which students receive credit cannot be used.
- All work/activities must be documented with printed proof that each activity was completed. This documentation must be in the student’s portfolio. Step 1 = Information Gathering Activities (4 points Minimum): Students are to search websites or print materials for information about potential post-high school education options and/or careers. Students must show proof that these hours were completed by printing the articles/websites, printing the student’s annotations, and printing a typed detailed summary of what they learned. This printed material is a required part of the student’s senior project portfolio. Research Ideas: • Complete and print the results of an online Interest/skill inventory. (1 Point) • Create and print a 5-year career plan. (1 Point) • Research and compare general information about potential colleges, trade schools, apprenticeships, training options and create/print a cost analysis spreadsheet. (2 points) • Research the employment outlook for jobs/careers of which you have interest in. Print and annotate all research and write a summary of findings. (2 points) • Complete a career/job vs. personality lifestyle compatibility analyses (research how well your desired/planned career will allow you to live your desired lifestyle). (2 points) • Other by project supervisor approval Step 2 = Action/Participation Learning Activities (20 points minimum): Students must complete several different hands-on type activities to help prepare them for college, tech school, or going straight into the work force. Students must show proof that the activities were completed through photos, screen shots, detailed activity notes, receipts, printed results, etc. Action/Participation Ideas: • Take a campus tour. Document your tour with a photo of you on the campus and a written summary of what you did on the tour. (1 point per tour + maximum of 4 points) • Schedule and attend a parent/student/counselor meeting to discuss future readiness. Type a summary of your meeting. (1 point) • Attend a college recruitment/information meeting. Document your attendance with a typed summary. (1 Point per visit + maximum of 4 points) * Attending the PHS Invest in Your Future night will be worth 2 points. • Complete ACT preparation activities. Document with screen shots or worksheet copies. (1 Point) • Take an ACT test. Print a screenshot of completion. (2 points per test) • Participate in a job shadowing or internship experience. Document with a photo and typed summary. (4 points per experience + maximum of 8 points) • Conduct a formal interview with someone, other than a family member, who has your dream job. Type a document of questions and answers. (2 points) • Comple a scholarship, college entrance, or employment, application. Print the completed application or an email showing your application was received. (1 point each
- Maximum of 4) • Learn a specific job-related skill. Document it with printed photos with captions. (1-10 points as determined by a project supervisor) • Students can work at a paid job. Students must write a job summary with the following: who they work for, what duties they perform, and explain how the job will help them in future employment. The work must be completed during the senior project time frame. (1-5 points as determined by a project supervisor) • Other by project supervisor approval.
2026-2027 Due Dates
Note: The dates are subject to change. Students will be notified in advance of date changes via email.
Students are not required to start their senior projects until August of 2026 when their senior year begins. Students are able to begin their projects early. This allows students to use summer months work on their project if they desire.
Friday, January 23rd = Juniors observe this year's senior presentations
Monday, February 2nd, 6:30 PM @ PHS Auditorium= Senior Project Kick-Off Assembly for all juniors and a parent.
Tuesday, February 3rd - Thursday, May 5th = Juniors complete and submit their project plan for approval.
